John Hawkins, head of Belmont preparatory school in Mill Hill, north London, is the new chairman of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools. Mr Hawkins, who is 51, will chair the 500-member association for the next academic year.

An Open University graduate in mathematics, Mr Hawkins taught in both the state primary and independent sectors before becoming head of Caterham prep school in 1981. In 1991, he was appointed Master of Belmont, which is the co-ed prep school for Mill Hill, the co-ed day and boarding school. Last year he re-introduced boarding at Belmont, 10 years after the last boarders had left, in response to renewed parental demand.

Rebecca Bunting, formerly the assistant dean in the faculty of education at Roehampton Institute, has been appointed dean of the school of education at Anglia Polytechnic University.

Hull University has appointed Richard Andrews as its new chair in education from October 1. Professor Andrews is currently director of research and postgraduate programmes in the schools of lifelong learning and education at Middlesex University. In his new role, he will be responsible for research strategy in the Institute of Learning and will lead the centre for professional development and training in education.

Ken Davies has become director of the national school grounds charity Learning through Landscapes. Mr Davies. a landscape architect, succeeds Bill Lucas, who became chief executive of the Campaign for Learning last autumn.
