World wars revisited

15th December 2006, 12:00am
Scottish Archives for Schools has launched “Leaving it all behind” - a new online resource concentrating on the impact of the two world wars on servicemen, their families and society.

The interactive resource draws on a collection of more than 30,000 wills and pieces of correspondence, written by Scottish servicemen who died in the wars.

The documents show how ordinary Scots faced the prospect of dying for their country and made provision for their family and friends. The site also explains how the army disposed of soldiers’ pay and effects in the event of their death.

The information is designed to support the study of “People in the Past and Citizenship”, Philosophy (Intermediate 2 and Higher), Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (Intermediate 1, 2 and Higher) and Citizenship. The units each feature sources, audio files and activities. Teachers’ notes and background information are also available.
