The write stuff

Get a column and get ahead. Readers may recall that our FE Focus Scotland page used to be graced by contributions from Graeme Hyslop, then depute principal at Langside and soon promoted principal.

Eventually Norman Williamson, depute at Coatbridge, took over the slot. Lo and behold, his column this week (FE Focus, page V) notes that he is now principal designate and due to take over when Ian MacIver retires later this year.

Williamson told Jotter that the monthly columnar discipline had been helpful whe faced with interview presentations and tough questions. He had had to keep on top of issues, work out what he thought of them and express his views clearly.

We also recall from the dim and distant past occasional thoughtful articles by a principal teacher of modern languages, one Frank Pignatelli. Look where he went on to - first, running Strathclyde education and now Sufi (the Scottish University for Industry).

Pshaw to those who say there has to be some other reward beyond the fees we pay.
