OUTSTANDING
Safety through apps
The creators of an app that is protecting pupils from domestic abuse in Cornwall has been awarded more than £150,00 for its expansion. “Operation Encompass” was created by head Elisabeth CarneyHawworth and her husband, David (pictured). It enables police to notify teachers of any domestic abuse incidents at which pupils were present.
GOOD
#LetThemTeach support
Four major multi-academy trusts have backed Tes’ #LetThemTeach campaign. Since the summer, we’ve been calling for teachers to be added to the “shortage occupation list”, which would make it easier for non-EU foreign teachers overseas to gain the visa needed to work here permanently.
REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT
Primary teachers’ mental health
Academics have called for “urgent intervention” to improve primary teachers’ mental health. The calls come from researchers at the University of Exeter who followed primary teachers for three academic years and found that almost a third experienced high levels of psychological distress.
SPECIAL MEASURES
Safeguarding online
A coroner will be writing to the DfE after it was revealed that a 15-year-old boy who died by suicide had looked up methods of suicide on school computers in the weeks before his death. His searches were blocked, but the IT system failed to trigger an automatic email to make teachers aware.
