Two hours a week is the minimum time that should be spent on art in S1 and S2, says Curriculum Paper 9, “Art in Secondary Schools.” The development of pupils’ powers of observation is fundamental, but in the past teachers have tried to foster this development by spending a lot of time on realistic drawing, “a concept which educationally is far too narrow.” Linking art to other subjects, notably technical and homecraft is recommended in the section dealing with non-certificate pupils.
