Three page report on a deepening crisis facing schools - an acute shortage of key personnel and a deterioration in the quality of candidates for vacant posts

The survey - Staffing Our Schools - offers a detailed snapshot of the current financial and staffing situation in schools in England and Wales and the outlook for next year.

It was carried out by a team of researchers, led by Dr Pamela Robinson of Brunel University, a specialist in teacher supply.

Questionnaires were sent to primary and secondary schools throughout England and Wales in February and returned during March. The sample obtained reflects the views of one in 10 (384) secondary and one in 50 (405) primary schools, and represents a cross-section of school type, regions and local education authorities.

The report also analyses trends in recruitment to initial teacher training (see page 12), giving an indication of future supply problems.
