The independent state-funded academy schools in England, a favourite of Education Secretary Michael Gove, have failed to narrow the attainment gap. A National Audit Office report found that, while there was an improved performance among children eligible for free meals, who have special needs or who have English as an additional language, the gap between them and their peers has grown wider in academies than in other schools with comparable intakes.
