Around 75 teachers exchange with American counterparts every year under the British Council-Fulbright scheme. Exchanges are for six weeks, one term, or a full academic year, for teachers with at least three years’ experience.
Exchange partners swap jobs and homes, but keep their own salaries, with British teachers making their own arrangements for money to be transferred to an account in the US.
US visa regulations require proof of a minimum salary or income of $21,000 (pound;13,500). Professional indemnity is usually agreed between schools, but exchange teachers are advised to take out their own travelmedical insurance.
