Responding to the demand among young people for information about careers in the media, Media and Arts Opportunities, a branch of Birmingham TEC, has hosted a day of workshops in Birmingham, bringing together students and employers.
Vocational qualifications in media topics are increasingly popular, but young people attending heard from Richard Pearce, of the Birmingham Post and Mail, that “Students get hung up on qualifications and don’t realise that skills developed through good work experience are equally important”. The students were also surprised to learn of the different routes taken before working in journalism.
Vicky Seagar, representing the Birmingham Careers Service, said about providing advice for working in the media: “It’s an area where we have to work hard to keep up to date and one not readily documented.”
