A survey by Exeter University showed that 36 per cent of girls aged 5-11 and more than half of boys of the same age are not taking the equivalent of a brisk 10-minute walk each week. Boys tend to remain more active throughout their early years, while girls' activity levels decline as early as five.
Children in the 1990s are the most inactive compared with all previous generations, according to new research.
