Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary, dropped in to see the completed building work at Godalming College in Surrey, writes Steve Hook. He joined the principal, David Adelman, and the chair of governers, Margaret Jack, on a tour.

The pound;9 million development includes a dedicated classroom and study areas for 16- to 19-year-olds and a sports centre. More than pound;4 billion has now been spent on college renovation since the Learning and Skills Council was started in 2001. The modernisation programme will include every college in England.

Mr Johnson said: “These new centres are a real investment in the future education of young people and a further step forward in our commitment to replace old and crumbling school and college buildings.” Photograph: Neil Turner
