One-in-three of our sample found sport the least enjoyable aspect of their school lives. Overall, it came second after exams and tests as the thing they remembered with least affection. This will not please ministers, who expect teachers to be enthusiastic about sports and tests.
Rather worryingly, a couple of the sample didn’t enjoy studying at school either, and working with teachers came low on the list of things people seemed to enjoy at school.
“Working with teachers” was also one of the lowest-ranked choices for the question of what people saw as the positives of teaching. Perhaps these respondents plan to spend as little time in the staffroom as possible.
But what’s to be deduced from the fact that only four of the 75 would-be teachers in our survey are only-children, or that more than 10 per cent achieved first-class degrees?
