RM CURRICULUM WINDOW BOX: The Scottish Desktop. pound;913. Available from RM Machines Sales Desk, tel: 0870 9086969, e-mail: salesdesk@rm.com

Research Machines, one of the major players in the world of educational ICT, has recognised the value of providing solutions for classroom teachers in their delivery of the new 5-14 ICT guidelines by providing the Scottish Desktop.

The Curriculum Window Box computer contains a wide range of pre-installed software that aims to meet the needs of the curriculum. As a result of consultations with representatives of some Scottish local authorities, RM has produced a desktop which relates directly to the new guidelines.

When purchasing a Curriculum Window Box, Scottish schools are supplied with a CD-Rom which, when installed, rearranges the desktop to include icons that identify the main strands of the new guidelines: Creating and Presenting; Collecting and Analysing; Searching and Researching; Communicating ad Collaborating; Controlling and Modelling.

Each of the packages included is mapped to the relevant strand and gives the busy classroom teacher confidence in the knowledge that they are accessing the appropriate software to deliver the new guidelines.

Additional packages installed on the computer by schools can be included within the relevant strand. For example, Microsoft Publisher, which is used extensively in primary schools, can easily be added to the Creating and Presenting strand.

Most Scottish teachers will be feeling apprehensive about the expectations placed on them by the new guidelines. The Scottish Desktop of the RM Curriculum Window Box will give them at least a starting point, enabling them to become familiar with the terminology of the document at the same time as accessing the software packages that they wish to use with their children.
