The famous duffel coat is going. Terry Christie, head of Musselburgh Grammar, who doubles as part-time manager of First Division football side Alloa, is quitting later this year.

Christie stoutly carried on at Musselburgh after a hotly disputed pasting from HMI. He has naturally never been a big fan of league tables, which have never done his school many favours.

His antipathy to the focus on hard results and tables obviously does not transfer to his extracurricular interest. Alloa are currently propping up the Bell’s First Division and look set for the drop. Managers do not usually survive such a reality check. But the duffel coat has a track record of survival.
