As if Glasgow University education faculty did not have enough troubles (TESS last week), it is to lose star researcher Walter Humes, author of The Leadership Class in Scottish Education. He is off to the Jordanhill campus of Strathclyde University, where he will be an asset in the race for recognition in the universities’ research assessment exercse, which brings largesse in its wake.

Surely the departure of this well-known controversialist can have nothing to do with the unpleasantness late last year when Humes was one of four department heads who resigned in protest at Bart McGettrick’s management of the faculty as dean and the thwarting of their professorial aspirations?
