An Angus primary this week turned in one of the best-ever HMI rankings, achieving 14 very goods and one good - for accommodation and facilities - in the table of quality indicators.

Monikie primary, outside Carnoustie, led by Trish Troz, the teaching head, is rated highly for its work in English and maths among a raft of outstanding judgments. It improves year by year.

Mrs Troz is said to provide “inspirational leadership” and has the strong support of three other teachers who describe the atmosphere in the 100-pupil school as “empowering and uplifting”.

Pupils say the teachers are very good, are proud of their school and behaviour is excellent. Mrs Troz said: “We call it the best school in the world and the ethos is just brilliant.”

Inspectors describe systems for quality assurance as “exemplary”.

In a remarkable blueprint on how to run a school, they go on to highlight the involvement of children in drawing up the rules for behaviour inside and outside the classroom.
