More than 21,000 pupils refused a place at their first-choice school last year won admission on appeal.

Official figures published this week show parents won 35.5 per cent of appeals lodged in 2004-5, a slight increase on the previous year. Total appeals fell by 40,000 to slightly more than 1.5 million.
