* Underwear features in the work of artists as diverse as Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Mel Ramos and Allan Jones, but it would be a brave teacher who would introduce it as an art project for adolescents. However, it is an appropriate one for the cheerful innocence of the average five-year-old, devoid of self-consciousness.

* Read pupils The Queen’s Knickers’ by Nicholas Allan (Red Fox), as an introduction. This story of the queen who receives a chest full of different knickers for every occasion is ideal for infants and can introduce a class project in which every pupil makes a jolly pair of paper and tissue-decorated knickers. The possibilities are endless but consider knickers for all seasons, flame-decorated ones for November 5th, a pair for autumn covered in leaves, winter ones with icicles or a fetching number for spring with rainbows. Further possibilities include knickers to wear at a match of your favourite football team, knickers “with attitude” that repel enemies and knickers for walking the dog decorated with jolly pictures of the family pet.
