Erin Keogh, a pupil at a school run by Capability Scotland, has been selected as a regional winner in the annual Junior Painter of the Year competition, run by Sightsavers, an international charity that works with disabled people in the developing world.
A painting by the 14-year-old, who attends Corseford School in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, was chosen from more than 5,000 entries across the UK.
Erin’s painting is currently on display in a special exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, alongside original works by illustrator Quentin Blake and Professor Maurice Cockrill, keeper of the Royal Academy of Arts.
She said: “I love working with paints and using sponges and brushes. I like the colour purple, which is also the colour of my wheelchair.”
The theme for the competition, now in its fifth year, was “Visions of the Future”. The competition aims to encourage creativity with paint in the classroom, while raising awareness of the scale of avoidable blindness throughout the world.
