Glowing illuminated costumes featured in the fashion show, dancers performed numbers they had created themselves and an acoustic band provided a lively interlude during an evening packed with culture and entertainment. Welcome to the Expressive Art Show at Linlithgow Academy.

Behind the scenes, at the school’s theatre, the action continued with S6 students providing refreshment as part of an enterprise project and S3s taking charge of hair and makeup.

The show, which took place last month in front of an audience of 300 enthusiastic friends and family members, featured students of all ages, with entertainment ranging from musical composition to dance, poetry and song.

Christie Jamieson and Sally Bell, both in S5, hosted the event, and performed in their own acoustic band. During the first half, they introduced senior dancers from S5 and S6 and junior dancers from S1, who performed numbers they had choreographed themselves. Musical performances were also homegrown: provided by a band of S5 and S6 students who had composed the song they performed.

Students from S2 then modelled 50 outfits in the fashion and performance costume show. The young people had created works individually or in groups, selecting one of five themes that included “newspapers” (items had to be made of newspaper), and “age of empires”, where performance costumes could represent any historical empire - from the dramatic garb of the samurai to the straitened style of the Victorians.

Art teacher Laura Watt said that the evening had “gone really well - close to flawless”.

Preparations for the show had started in November, when the school’s art teachers agreed themes and set tasks for students of all age groups.
