Assembly of the week

Mark the United Nations annual World Water Day on 22 March. The slogan this year is "Water, water everywhere, only if we share". The day focuses on the importance of fresh water and advocates the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Use Jam2804's PowerPoint presentation for an assembly that makes students think about how much water we use every day, and then consider how many people in the developing world go without.

Offer them a few thought-provoking statistics - for example, by 2025 the UN estimates that 75 per cent of the world's population will not have access to reliable, clean water. The figure now is about 20 per cent.

Ask students how much water they think we need and leave them with a question: starting at home and at school, how might everyone cooperate to ensure that we share the resources we have, wherever in the world we live?
