Teachers are coming under increasing pressure to play a more prominent role in the assessment of students because of university staff cuts, the conference heard. Delegates called for an investigation into the support given by teacher education institutions to those responsible for the assessment of students after complaints that Glasgow University tutors no longer visited their second year B.Ed students on placement in schools. Strathclyde University was planning similar changes, warned Stewart Paterson, West Dunbartonshire local association secretary.
