The Standing Conference on Studies in Education this Wednesday awarded its annual book prizes for “the most distinguished contributions to educational research and scholarship” published in 1999, writes Geraldine Brennan.

First prize (pound;1,000) goes to Schools Making a Difference: let’s be realistic by Martin Thrupp, published by Open University Press (“A first-class example of policy scholarship”, said the judges). Andrew Pollard and Ann Filer have won the second priz (pound;750) for The Social World of Pupil Career: strategic biographies through primary school, published by Continuum (“adding greatly to our understanding of children’s reactions to their primary school”). The highly commended title was Men in the Nursery: gender and caring work by Claire Cameron, Peter Moss and Charlie Owen, published by the Institute of Education, University of London (“an important and original investigation into the nature of gendered work”).
