A GCSE project on the performance of Citro n cars was among the award winners in the new National Maths Award Scheme run by Stanley Thornes Publishers to encourage students to continue maths to A levelHigher grade.

Teachers nominated pupils whose work revealed real enthusiasm and aptitude for maths. Photocopies of this work were submitted by the end of July. With the Citro n project, the student’s measurements of cars’ performance led him to research the theory of correlation and regression. Other entries ranged from maximising area, volume and algebraic sequences to extensive statistical analysis.

The national award winners, who each receive Pounds 100 and a Pounds 50 STP book voucher for their school are: Jainil Gandhi, All Hallows Roman Catholic School, Farnham; Jonathan Davies, King Edward VI School, Southampton; Leah Band, High Storrs School, Sheffield; Lisa Lim, Mark Rutherford Upper School, Bedford; and Stephanie Cook, The Emmbrook School, Berkshire. There are also five regional winners. Contact Amanda Stewart on 01242 228586.
