YOUNG WOMAN ENGINEER OF THE YEAR 1998

Kim Dennis, 26, information technology skill group manager with Marconi Communications, Stoke, Coventry, has won this Institution of Incorporated Engineers award. A cheque for pound;1,000, a silver rose bowl and certificate were presented to her on January 13 by The Princess Royal.

Runner-up and winner of the Women into Science and Engineering prize was Catherine Day, aged 30, a senior test engineer with Millbrook Proving Ground, Millbrook, Bedfordshire. The winner of the Mary George Memorial Prize offered to younger entrants was Angela McConville, 23, a production and logistics controller with Bradley Doublelock, Bingley, West Yorkshire.

LONDON ELECTRICITY SCHOOL GROUND AWARDS

London Electricity and the Learning through Landscapes charity are offering 50 grants of up to pound;2,000 to nursery, primary, secondary and special schools in London. This year there are also six special awards for projects which help improve children's numeracy and literacy. Closing date for applications: February 19.
