The Educational Institute of Scotland sent out a strong message this week that it will put the campaign for a Scottish parliament at the top of its agenda.

Willie Hart, convener of the powerful finance and general purposes committee, told delegates at the union’s annual conference in Perth: “No one believes that the heather will bloom brighter or a new Caledonia mystically arise but what we do say is that a Scottish parliament can give us the opportunity to protect and enhance the best features of Scottish society, not least of which is our public comprehensive education system.”

The EIS has committed Pounds 40,000 to what Mr Hart called the “double aye” campaign to secure a vote for a parliament with tax powers.
