After last week's shocking news about school security budgets going through the roof, we hear of a Highland adviser visiting a remote crofting community in Sutherland who was met by a formidable perimeter fence barring the way to intruders.

"It's a terrible state we've come to when a school like this has to put up fences like that," he complained to the heidie.

"What do you mean?" the heidie replied. "It's to keep the sheep out."
