Watson Briggs, a pupil at the High School of Glasgow who featured on these pages in September, has been included in the Scotland squad for the Czech Junior International Championships being held this weekend.

Meanwhille, 100 primary school children are expected to take part in the North Ayrshire Badminton Carnival at Inverclyde today. All the P6 and P7 pupils in the Garnock cluster of primaries were invited to attend the coaching session, which is being overseen by former Scotland player Russell Hogg.

“This is a great chance for children to come along and try the game,” he says. “By getting them early, it means we, the coaches, can make sure they learn the right way to play from the word go.”

Badminton Scotland’s first Play Badminton Carnival of the season was held at Meadowmill Sports Centre in Prestonpans last month. Every primary school in East Lothian was invited to the P4-P5 and P6-P7 festivals and 800 children took part.
