The second Bank of Scotland under-11 championships at Meadowbank sports centre in Tranent saw 69 players from all over Scotland take part as badminton built on last year’s inaugural event, set up to give a competitive outlet for primary children.
Badminton Scotland’s coaching development officer, David Forbes, has emphasised the importance of getting teachers involved if the sport is to flourish. He believes schools hold the key to increasing participation.
“We want to give training courses to teachers all across the country,” he says. “Once these are complete, the teachers will be capable of giving badminton lessons. Hopefully, the knock-on from this will be more after-school clubs to get more people playing and enjoying badminton.”
