I SHOULD like to point out to Lucia Chaplin (TES Letters, February 5) that no parent in England has to look after children “because teachers are on training days”.

The days are arranged when the children are entitled to holiday - five days that used to be known as “occasional days”. These days used to be the prerogative of staff too. The then education secretary Kenneth Baker decided teachers should forgo this time and train while the pupils continued their normal holiday with parents.
