I am sure that it will come as a relief to readers that Michael Barber thinks that “industrial action has a place” (TES, May 12), but I fear he has completely missed the point about the current National Union of Teachers’ ballot for action on class sizes.

Not only is industrial action on this subject actually popular among many parents, it is aimed at something wider than the current Government as well. It will, I hope, underline to Mr Barber’s ally, David Blunkett, that doing nothing about class sizes until they exceed 40 is simply not acceptable as Labour policy.
