Bare majority for teachers

A PLANNED teacher majority of one on the new GTC has been increased to two after pressure from Labour backbenchers. But further changes to its composition have been ruled out.

The council remains deeply unhappy at what it regards as unnecessary interference, and is irked hat its term of office is to be ended a year early.

Dr Sutherland told ministers: "The signal which this gives to the teaching profession is yet again that teachers cannot be trusted to manage their own professional affairs in a competent and effective manner."
