Followers of the Bash Street Kids in the Beano, many of whom are known by publisher DC Thomson to be teachers, were fascinated by the recent story in which the school was assessed by an undercover HMI to see where it rated in the school league tables.

The infiltrator turned out to be disguised as Winston the janitor’s cat - and this in the same week, as it happened, that Jack McConnell promised enhanced inspection of public services.

Clearly someone on the comic’s staff has a deft comic touch - or impeccable insider information. If your janny has a cat, check it out. Remember, Graham Donaldson, head of the inspectorate, intends to target underperforming schools. You have been warned.
