Battle for the past

You've got to get up early if you want to catch a Roman battle. English Heritage's gigantic History in Action weekend runs through 2,000 years - Roman drill formations first thing, Civil War skirmishes by lunchtime, D-Day accompanied by Spitfires at tea-time.

Up to 4,000 performers in period uniforms relive bellicose moments from Norman disappointments in Byzantium to Lancastrian turncoatery in the Wars of the Roses. All in the beautiful grounds of the semi-ruined Elizabethan mansion of Kirby Hall, Northamptonshire, August 10 and 11. Information: 0870 333 1183 www.english-heritage.org.uk.
