Teachers are reminded that the National Galleries of Scotland is inviting entries for its Art Competition for Schools 2008. Now in its fifth year, the competition was launched initially to promote the opening of the Weston Link and the new education facilities it provided at the National Gallery. Its aim is to encourage young people to interact with and be inspired by works of art in the National Galleries’ collection.

There are six categories in all, including group work. Twelve winning entries will feature in a calendar sent to every school in Scotland, and 50 will go on show at the National Gallery in Edinburgh before touring the country. Prizes are also awarded.

Pupils have to look online at three works of art, on a theme, from the collections:

Nursery: Birds

Primary 1-3: Can You See the Music?

Primary 4-7: Sit in Splendour

S1-S2: Art to Wear

Special Education Schools: Come Closer.

Group Entry: Any of the above themes.

The closing date is May 9.

The 2007 exhibition is on show at Glasgow Science Centre until June 3.

Visit www.nationalgalleries.org for three works from the collection to inspire each category and helpful discussion points for teachers.
