A shiver of excitement swept through independent school heads at a conference at Leicester City Football Club on Monday amid rumours the England squad would be practising there for their game against Serbia-Montenegro the next day.
The rooms used looked on to the pitch and the prospect of a free preview caused much agitation. Sadly, the players never arrived. A disappointed Geoff Lucas, secretary of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference, said: “There was plenty of posh at Leicester, but no Becks.”
