Revealing choice of a good read by David Bell, recently translated from chief inspector of schools to top official at the DfES - Winning, by Jack Welch, former head of General Electric. Mr Bell’s underlings at Sanctuary Buildings may be pleased to know that Mr Welch advocates a tough but fair approach to management (although he ruthlessly dispensed with the worst-performing 10 per cent of GE’s employees.

Mr Bell gave his tip in a magazine from the National Literacy Trust. He also liked Steven Levitt’s Freakonomics and Russia’s War by Richard Overy.

What a boy.
