Bend it like ballet boys

I had not realised that I, in common with many other people and despite the success of the film, Billy Elliot, had such gender-stereotyped views on boys and the medium of dance.

I recently attended a most enjoyable show, put on by the Chelsea School of the University of Brighton, which celebrated five years of pioneering work by BA QTS final-year students, members of the all-male Kick-Start Dance company, in partnership with boys from 10 schools.

Not only was their performance spectacularly good, but what a positive way of channelling boys' energies. All credit to the hard-working lecturers and students. Hopefully, this type of initiative is, or will be, reflected by other higher education institutions.
