The total capital cost of the programme has now risen to pound;129 million, officials say. This includes public-private partnership (PPP) funding, the Scottish Office’s “school rationalisation” support, additional money made available to all authorities under last year’s Budget, and the council’s own resources including capital receipts from the sale of buildings.

Officials believe the result will be “the best maintained schools in Britain along with the highest level of information and communication technology equipment of any local authority”.

The council has already set the standards for its reinvestment programme - for buildings, it is the refurbishment carried out at Bellahouston Academy following a major fire; for information and communications technology, it is the new technology wing at Holyrood Secondary. Details will be spelt out in a strategy paper next month.
