It is refreshing to see that traditional standards prevail in North Lanarkshire. Brian Miller, heidie at Dalziel High in Motherwell, is justifiably proud of being one of four schools in the authority to win the Government’s Charter Mark, especially as it follows his school’s success last year in being awarded an “excellence” accolade from the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities.

His letter to parents informing them of the latest achievement proudly poclaims that “Summa Petenda prevails”, a reference to the school’s Latin motto - “aiming high”, as you don’t need to be told.

Less elevatedly, Miller goes on to describe the school as “Simply the Best” in completing “a quite unique double”. We’ll leave it to readers to decide whether this refers to the theme song beloved of Rangers supporters, another group who might just achieve a notable double this year. Or is Tina Turner the real influence?
