(Photograph) - Stoughton school in Guildford is boasting dramatic improvements in reading thanks to ‘synthetic phonics’. Now the Government has announced that every primary will have to follow Stoughton, and use this traditional approach to teach reading from September.
Teachers and unions have protested that using the law to force staff to adapt synthetic phonics undermines professional freedom.
But Lord Adonis, the minister responsible for primaries, told The TES: “I think teachers will welcome this because it brings greater clarity in the teaching of reading. Being prescriptive about what is right is not a mistake.”
