(Photograph) - Stoughton school in Guildford is boasting dramatic improvements in reading thanks to ‘synthetic phonics’. Now the Government has announced that every primary will have to follow Stoughton, and use this traditional approach to teach reading from September.

Teachers and unions have protested that using the law to force staff to adapt synthetic phonics undermines professional freedom.
