Mark Taylor presents a misleading analysis of the forces at work in the debate over what history to teach in schools (“History ought to make your head hurt”, 28 October).

It is true that Ofsted and the Historical Association support the “enquiry-led” approach. However, it is misleading to suggest that the Better History Group (BHG) opposes it. In fact, the BHG is very closely linked to the Historical Association. This should bring great comfort to any history teacher thinking the BHG may be a threat to that vast majority of history teachers whom Mark Taylor describes as “progressives”.

Chris McGovern, Director, History Curriculum Association.
