YOUR correspondent Richard Gold is quite right when he says that a refusal to allow a Year 11 pupil to progress to Year 12 can amount to an unlawful exclusion from school (TES, August 25).
But sixth-form staff need also to be very careful when advising students heading for low grades to abandon their A-levels. Tis may be good for the school’s league- table position, but it is still an ex-clusion from school. Unless done properly, by the head personally and with all rights of appeal, the exclusion will be illegal.
