Big Bangs theory made a fine read

The Diary admits to being a bit on the late side with this one, having just picked up Zo Heller's 2003 novel Notes on a Scandal from the three-for-two basket at the local supermarket. The book describes a teacher's affair with a young pupil, but the following passage, describing a teacher called Bangs, caught our notice: "I found myself stunned and slightly appalled by the corporeal presence of BangsI his shaving rash was in full flower. For a while it seemed to me that I might black out from the sensory overload of the moment, the sheer Bangsness of Bangs."

We sure hope the coincidence of the unusual surname with that of John Bangs, candidate for the NUT leadership, is purely accidental.
