Big, beefy and indispensable

Most Popular Web Sites: The Best of the Net from A2Z Que, Pounds 37.50

While Internet books continue to pour out, this is one that I would not want to be without. It is a compilation from the popular Lycos site, one of the best pieces of search software.

The book is big and beefy, 1200 pages in all with a CD-Rom attached. The CD contains all the text of the book and, of course, all the sites that are mentioned can be reached from the CD once you are on-line, without having to type in the complicated page codes.

The topics are classified under headings such as meteorology, earth sciences, biology and botany. There is a brief but illuminating review of each site. You could, of course, find all these sites by going on to the Internet but it would cost you a great deal more than the price of the book. No matter how experienced you are you will find sites that you are unaware of even in areas that you probably know well.

For a school this is a good purchase: the high price could well be recouped by the decrease in aimless searching. The book has its distractions and its humour. How else would I have found out about the Anti-Microsoft Page, the Shiki Internet Haiku Salon or the Shakespearean Insult Generator?
