SOME pound;1.5 million will be available immediately for literacy research and training to kickstart the major expansion, it was revealed. The first results will be available by the end of the year.
Research projects will examine the factors influencing literacy levels, attitudesand experiences of employers and employees, the extent of existing provision and literacy patterns among disadvantaged groups.
The number of specialist literacy workers will rise from 40 to 240. The training programme is expected to swallow most of the extra cash.
