The Scottish Funding Council announced this week how it intends to distribute capital investment of pound;50 million to the colleges over the next two years.
The sum will be released in two tranches of pound;25 million in each year to be spent on modernising buildings, clearing maintenance backlogs and upgrading equipment. Colleges will also be expected to address health and safety issues and continue to implement disability legislation.
The extra money had already been planned as part of the Scottish Executive’s spending review but individual colleges now know how much they will receive - the bigger the college, the bigger the allocation.
The announcement will bring to pound;88 million the total capital funding for colleges in 2008, compared with pound;65.9 million in 2005-06.
