Bin those notes

Where there's muck there's brass, at least in Thornton Heath, Surrey, where a student's discarded college notes have earned the local council a handsome pound;50.

The paperwork, which included the student's home address, was found by local authority officials among some illegally-dumped household rubbish.

A letter was soon on the doormat at the student's home address, pointing out to his family the error of their ways. His father owned up and, rather than take the alternative punishment, five hours of community service, agreed to pay the fine.
