Sustainability is all. Alan Johnson, the new Education Secretary, launches an action plan for all schools to become environmentally friendly by 2020 and the Commons select committee announces an inquiry into sustainable schools. And the attack on the throw-away culture starts to bite. An edict orders Department for Education and Skills staff not to have individual waste bins. Recyclable paper must go in a “tree-hugger” box, while nasty Coke cans and polystyrene cups must go in a communal bin. So that’s why officials may be slow to cough up the facts: they’re hiking to the bin.
