Police have arrested three watchmen at Kyanguli secondary in Machakos, 50 miles south-east of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where, as The TES went to press, the death toll has risen to 68 after a fire in the boys’ dormitory. The authorities suspect angry students set light to the school. More than 100 studnts at Kyanguli were among 2,800 candidates whose results were cancelled when the examination council detected cheating. Students believe the fire was started in revenge because they ignored the call to protest. The victims could not escape because a door was locked and the windows were barred.
